For the first time in a number of years Area trials were held for this years British Championships. Our governing body have decided that this would be a great idea, but again failed to investigate properly how it would work in each area. Four children in each weight group would qualify for this years British Championships, held in Sheffield next month. Out of fifty four weight groups over the 'B', 'C' & 'D' age bands none had more that four entrants which meant that everybody was already guaranteed a place from the trials. However even children who had no other competitors in their section still had to make the journey, weigh-in and wait around all day for nothing.
Our policy was only to send players who would have a chance of a medal at the Nationals, and not to send children who would be out of their depth at the intimidating National Championships.
We sent Rhiannon Baldwin (Twice national medalist)
Sam Hall (Two times National Champion & England Squad member)
Ryan Phillips (National Silver Medalist & England Squad member)
Eric Ham (National Silver medalist)
Tom Greenough
Out of the five players only Eric & Tom had anybody to fight. Tom won both his fights whilst Eric won his one and only fight. Sam, Ryan and Rhiannon wasted a full sunny Sunday with nobody to fight. Next year pressure will be coming from all angles for the Nationals to revert back to open entry as it was before.
