Glossop Judo Club took 18 competitors down the M1 to compete in the Nottingham Open Judo Championships, hosted by Cobra Judo Club. 201 competitors took part in a very exciting and well organised event. Half of Glossop’s team managed to come home with medals and the final tally was 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 bronze medals.
It was nice to go to an event that allowed the under 8’s to compete in their first competition. Not so nice for some of the parents though!! In the Under 8’s Glossop had Lauren & Rachael Errett, Zak Fletcher and Mark Wickham all competing. It was a very good performance by them all and for Zak, Rachael and Mark it was their first experience of a big competition. Lauren although still only seven took it in her stride and picked up another gold medal. Zak had a nervy first fight losing out to the eventual winner but came back with 2 good wins. Mark and Rachael both did well and should be able to draw on this for experience. |

In the over 8 section Glossop had James Casulli, David Leyshon, James Whickam, Abigail Walker, Kyle Fletcher, Eric Ham, Naimi Gaskin, Judy Browne, Abbie Mutch, Bob Browne and Ross Denham. There were many top class fighters attending this event and for the older fighters picking up any wins proved rather difficult. They all fought with the determination that club coaches Geoff Ham and Steve Phillips have come to expect. David, James Whickam , Kyle, James Casulli, Abbie , Judy and Ross all fought well in very tough groups but came away empty handed. Bob Browne picked up a good win in a very large difficult group and Naomi Gaskin collected a Bronze after a good fight with Abbie Mutch. Abigail Walker went one step further in winning a well deserved Silver Medal in another very hard section. Glossop’s only gold in this section went to the always impressive Eric Ham. Winning all his fights in double quick time he again seemed to forget that fights are allowed to last longer than 10 seconds!!!. |
